It can be a real hassle and some games will simply refuse to work. I personally wouldn't try to run anything beyond Quake or Blood in DOSBox, nor any Windows-only game, especially if I lacked the horsepower to do so. More limited since the focus is on DOS rather than Windows and, as hardware and APIs evolved, minimum requirements grew too steep for DOS, not to mention that, if you're running Windows 95 on DOSBox, Windows itself is taking valuable memory that's better used by games instead. It's an emulated machine (IBM PC standard only) instead of a virtual one. If you go this route make sure to install Windows 98 SE which was the latest version of Windows 9x which allowed you to go back to DOS if needed and is far less buggy than Windows ME.ĭOSBox. Haven't tested with VMWare but my experience with VirtualBox has been pretty bad. I have also read that a virtual machine setup is possible, but I really have no idea how to go about that. I have read that Windows XP mode for Windows 7 could work, but my laptop does not have that. I have a laptop running Windows 7 and a desktop running Windows 10, so options for either of these would be fine. Because it was just a learning program, there are no patch files or support files to convert it to a modern usable form. Emulating options that may not work well for more intensive games would probably work just fine for this. If it helps, this game is basically like an encyclopedia learning program, so it requires very little computing power. Compatibility modes do not work, and I have tried using D3DWindower to no success. Is there any reliable way to run this old game on a new machine? I have tried several options. The game is called "The Dinosaur Hunter". It may also work on Windows XP, but I am not really sure. It is copywrited 1995, but I believe I used to run it on Windows 98 when I was younger. I have a very old game that I would like to try to run on one of my computers.
